Steve arrived at Springfield Park on Christmas Eve 1992 on a month’s loan from Tranmere Rovers. He made his Latics League debut on 26th December 1992 against Bolton Wanderers Burnden Park in a game that Latics lost 2-1. His stay at the club saw him make just 4 League appearances during which he didn’t score a goal before returning to Prenton Park. At Tranmere earlier in his career he played up front with another future Latic, Jim Steel.
He used to do a spectacular somersault every time he scored, which figured seeing as he was an accomplished gymnast in his teens. Sadly the Springfield Park faithful were never treated to this spectacle. His final game for the club was on 24th January 1992 in a home game against Reading that resulted in a 1-1 draw. He signed for York City from Tranmere Rovers and after one season at Bootham Crescent had a wonderful five seasons at Airdieonians in Scotland before finishing his playing career at Ayr United.
He was inducted into the Airdrieonians Hall of Fame in 2004 but he never saw it as he died in February of that year.
