Matty was a Latics trainee and after showing a great deal of promise as a youngster he was given his Latics League debut on 2nd October 1993 against Chester City at Springfield Park when he came on as a substitute for Alan Johnson. Latics won the game 6-3 and from that moment on he was a virtual ever present in the team that season making 27+5 League appearances.
He stayed at the club for three and a half seasons before he decided he wanted a move to a bigger club after becoming unhappy at Springfield Park. So he joined Port Vale on a free transfer prior to the 1997/98 season. In total he played 102+17 League games for the Blues without scoring.
