Ali was signed from Bolton Wanderers on a season long loan deal on 15th July 2010.
Ironically, he made his Premier League debut for the Trotters against Latics but he failed to gain regular first team action at the Reebok Stadium.
He made his Premier League debut on 29th August 2010 against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane which resulted in a 0-1 win for the Blues.
He had played in the Carling Cup Second Round against Hartlepool United five days earlier and he had also kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 win at the Victoria Ground.
He became a cult hero at the DW Stadium, winning the POTY Award and he was instrumental in the Blues securing their place in the Premier League following a win against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on the last day of season 2010/11.
On 4th July 2011 Ali signed a four year contract for £4,000,000. He went on to make 136 League appearances for the Blues with his last game coming on 6th April 2015 in a Championship fixture against Derby County at the DW Stadium in a 0-2 defeat.
After playing 136 (0) League games for Latics and one game for Brighton and Hove Albion on loan in (Oct/Nov 2014), he signed for Reading on 14th July 2015.
Ali is the first Omani player to ever play in the Premier League. In fact, he was also the first Omani player to play In Europe.
He has also won an FA Cup winners medal with Latics along with the Saudi Arabian League title and a Saudi Arabian Super Cup winners medal.
