Derek arrived at Springfield Park in September 1978 from Port Vale. He made his Latics debut as a substitute on 13th September 1978 against Rochdale at Springfield Park. The game resulted in a 3-0 victory for the Blues and was their first as a Football League club. He stayed at the club until the end of the following season when he was released and moved into Non League football with Stafford Rangers.
In total he played 32+16 League games for the Blues, during which time he scored 8 League goals. Derek was Latics’ first ever goal scoring substitute when he scored Latics’ fourth goal in that epic 1979 Good Friday beating of Port Vale at Springfield Park. (Younger fans – Latics were 3-0 down with 25 minutes remaining and won the game 5-3).
