Andy originally joined Latics as an apprentice and signed professional forms for the club in October 1986.  He made his League debut on 12th September 1987 against Doncaster Rovers at Springfield Park, a game that resulted in a 2-1 victory.  Andy was injury prone to such an extent that he made just 14 (8) League appearances in his three seasons at the club, scoring four League goals, before signing for Rotherham United in August 1989. His final game for the Blues came on 8th March 1989 against Bury at Springfield Park which resulted in a 1-0 win.

It was whilst at Millmoor that Andy had to retire from the game that he loved. He did go on to play at Non League level for Altrincham, Garswood United,  Ashton Town and Flint Town United, but his plans to stay in the game as a referee were dashed because of his long standing injury.
