Carl, a former England youth international, arrived at Springfield Park as a free agent on 6th October 1997, teaming up once again with John Deehan after playing under the Latics manager at Norwich City. He made his Latics League debut on 18th October 1997 against Luton Town at Springfield Park in a game that resulted in a 1-1 draw. He made 109+11 League appearances and scored 11 League goals for the club. He left the club after being released, with eight other players, by Steve Bruce on 21st May 2001.
By the start of the following season he and his ex Latics team mate Peter Beagrie, signed for Third Division outfit Scunthorpe United. His last club was Alfreton Town and he retired from the game in May 2005.
