BOBBY TODD (1949-2022)
All at Wigan Athletic Football Club are deeply saddened at the passing of former midfielder Bobby Todd at the age of 72.
Bobby was born in Goole on
Sunday, 11 September 1949 and began his football career as an apprentice at Scunthorpe United as a left winger.
He joined Liverpool in May 1967 for a season before moving to Rotherham United where he played 6 games before going to Manfield Town later in the season for a four-figure fee but he played only 4 games for the Stags.
Season 1969/70 saw Bobby at Workington where he played 16 games before ending the season at Hartlepool United.
Bobby was to join Gordon Milne's NPL side in August 1970 after a trial.
He looked like a Mexican bandit, socks were always rolled down, and he was a terrier in the midfield and was later to have his own song such became his popularity with the fans.
He made his Wigan league debut on Wednesday, 19 August 1970 at Springfield Park in a 3-0 win against Bradford Park Avenue (crowd 4,533), and in the next home game just days later, he scored against his own town club in a 7-0 win.
His last game for Latics was on Monday, 13 March 1972 in a 2-1 win over Runcorn (crowd 1,421). He had played 110 (69 lge) games for Latics and scored 14 (9 lge) goals.
He helped the team to the NPL title as well as a fantastic FA Cup run culminating in the narrow 1-0 defeat at Manchester City in the Third Round.
They also won the Lancs Floodlit Cup and finished runners-up in the Lancs Challenge Trophy.
After Latics, he joined Altrincham for season 1972/73 before joining Scarborough for the next two seasons and he was in the Scarborough side that were beaten 4-0 at Wembley in the 1975 FA Trophy Final.
An academic and a talented musician, he apparently became a success in business as an accountant and lived near his birthplace Goole. He regarded his football career as a failure.
He certainly wasn’t a failure for Wigan Athletic.
