Ian goes down in the history books as the first player that Latics signed upon gaining election into the Football League. Not content with that little piece of history, he is also the scorer of Latics’ first ever successful penalty kick which came on 28th October 1978 against Northampton Town in a 2-0 victory. He made his Latics League debut during the Blues first ever Football League game on 19th August 1978 against Hereford United at Edgar Street which resulted in a 0-0 draw. He made a total of 54+1 League appearances, scoring 7 League goals before being transferred to Portsmouth in October 1979 for a fee of £20,000. In March 1981 he signed for Australian outfit Canberra Arrows and he eventually made Australia his home.
