Gary was a regular in the Everton youth team before signing for the Blues in March 1991. He made his Latics League debut as a substitute for Don Page against Tranmere Rovers at Springfield Park on 12th March 1991, a game which resulted in a 0-1 defeat. He made a total of 57+27 League appearances and scored 17 League goals before signing for Bury for the start of the 1993/94 season.
