Ian started his career as a trainee at the club and at the start of his second year at the JJB Stadium he played two pre season friendlies against St Helens Town and Leigh RMI in the pre season of 2001/2002. He made his Latics League debut on 20th October 2001 when he played in the 2-3 defeat against Wrexham at the JJB Stadium. By the end of season 2001/02 he had played 4+0 League games for the club without scoring. He impressed manager Paul Jewell enough to offer him a one-year professional contract in May 2002 which he duly signed. Keiran Charnock and Paul Santus did likewise.
