oe started his career at Springfield Park as a trainee and he signed a professional contract with the club on 1st April 1989 after he made his Latics League debut some seven months earlier. This was on 30th September 1988 in a 2-0 victory over Blackpool at Springfield Park. During a five year stay at the club he made 115+4 League appearances and he scored 6 League goals.

He was sold to Bournemouth for a fee of £35,000 which was fixed by a tribunal on 1st July 1993. Latics protested strongly even after the tribunal but there was nothing they could do once the figure had been set. Bournemouth sold Joe to Everton for £250,000 three months later and to add even more insult to a pretty bad injury the fee that the Cherries finally received rose to £800,000.

A bit of Joe Parkinson trivia – did you know that to date he is still the only Latics trainee to ever go on and win a FA Cup winners medal?
