Jim was signed by Ian McNeill from Montrose for the start of the 1980/81 season. Although a more or less permanent fixture in Fred Eyre’s reserve team he struggled to get into the first team squad. He made his Latics League debut on 13th September 1980 against Darlington at the Feethams. Not only did the Blues lose 1-3, but Jim himself was substituted with David Glenn coming on in his place.
He was only to make 1 more substitute appearance for Latics at Springfield Park in a 1-0 victory over York City on 29th October 1980 before being released at the end of the season.
