OBITUARY - LARRY LLOYD (1948 - 2024)
All at Wigan Athletic Football Club are deeply saddened at the passing of former player-manager Larry Lloyd at the age of 75.
Laurence Valentine Lloyd was born in Bristol on Wednesday, 6 October 1948 and started playing football with Henbury Old Boys before being signed by Third Division side Bristol Rovers in 1967. He played 51 (43 lge) games for the Pirates scoring 1 league goal before a £50,000 bid from Bill Shankly saw the young central defender transferred to Liverpool in April 1969.
He was to have five seasons with the Reds playing 218 (150 lge) games scoring 5 (4 lge) goals. They were FA Cup runners-up in 1971 before winning the League and UEFA Cup double in season 1972/73. After gaining 8 England U23 caps, Sir Alf Ramsay gave him his full international debut in May 1971 against Wales (0-0) at Wembley Stadium.
In August 1974, Coventry City paid a record £240,000 for his services and he spent just over two seasons with the Sky Blues playing 54 (50 lge) games and scoring 6 (5 lge) goals.
