Towards the end of Latics’ first season as a Football League club John was signed on loan from Blackburn Rovers. He made his Latics League debut on 28th March 1979 in a game against Hereford United at Springfield Park which resulted in a 0-0 draw. He proved an instant it with the fans and Ian McNeill and before the season was over he had signed for the club in a permanent deal.

However, the injury jinx that had already robbed Latics of the services of Neil Davids struck John at the start of the following 1979/80 season when , in a freak training ground accident John broke his leg. He didn’t play during the whole of the following season and made his comeback at the start of season 1980/81. However, Larry Lloyd released John at the end of that League campaign and in he played 32 League games without scoring.

A bit of John Curtis trivia – did you know that John is a former England Schools hurdles champion?
