Alan was signed from Blackburn Rovers during the pre season of 1978/79, Latics’ first as a Football League club. He made his Latics League debut on 23rd August 1978 at Springfield Park against Grimsby Town. This was Latics’ first ever home game in the Football League and he came on as a substitute in the 3-0 defeat. In fact he goes down in history as Latics’ first substitute to be used in a League game. Just for the record he replaced Geoff Gay. He made 7+6 League appearances that season without hitting the back of the net.
The following season saw Alan struggling with injury and he was to make just one more League appearance (as a substitute) against Torquay United at Springfield Park on 6th October 1979 which the Blues lost 0-3. He was released shortly after that game to join Runcorn.
