Born in County Durham, Barney was a lively inside forward that enjoyed a really successful season with Latics, linking up well with Chambers, Hughes and Murphy. He joined Wigan having had a good season at York netting ten times in twenty appearances. On leaving Wigan he signed for Wrexham but he never quite enjoyed the same success after leaving Springfield Park.
