MONTROSE vs WIGAN ATHLETIC
1st August 1978
A GOOD WORK-OUT as FITNESS LEVELS IMPROVE.
The second game of the pre-season tour was on the following Wednesday evening against Montrose of the Scottish second division.
Latics named a strong side with Gore dropping into the right back role and Urquhart and Wright being paired up in the centre of the park. The defence again had to cope without Noel Ward, Brown and Curtis as they continued to recover from injury.
The Gable Endies grabbed an early lead in the 11th minute when WRIGHT got the vital scoring touch to find the back of the Latics net. However, there was no tame capitulation on this occasion and Wigan grew steadily into the game.
Half time; Montrose 1-0 Wigan Athletic.
The second half continued to be a competitive affair and Wigan found an equaliser on 86 minutes when substitute Tony QUINN again demonstrated his eye for a goal when he fired home. Wigan pushed hard to try and claim a second with Wilkie entering the fray for a tiring Purdie but the home side defended well and the game ended in a creditable draw.
