NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE
NETHERFIELD vs WIGAN ATHLETIC
30th September 1975
UNBEATEN LATICS MARCH ON
Wigan might have a tough schedule at present, and they could be forgiven for pointing out that five games in ten days is an unreasonable ask of a group of athletes. However, they were in no mood to relinquish their unbeaten League record.
The goal-scoring hero was John Rogers, his first strike came in the 17th minute when he sprinted onto a perfectly delivered through ball from Johnny King and struck a fierce shot past the helpless keeper. The second goal arrived just after the hour mark when ex-Netherfield man, Jeff Wright, swung in a corner and Rogers jumped unopposed to bullet a header into the Netherfield goal.
Latics could easily have won by more, Hinnigan had a stinging shot palmed to safety by the home keeper, and Wright was inches away from getting a vital touch to a low driven cross when well placed.
Netherfield did show some neat touches on a treacherous surface that was hardly conducive to good football, but the Latics defence was well-drilled and their tough tackling restricted the home side to a handful of half chances.
The main threat to the Wigan goal came from a series of long-distance efforts, but Eales showed good agility and handling and on the one occasion he was beaten Gore was on hand to clear the effort off the goal-line.
