NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE
WIGAN ATHLETIC vs BUXTON
20th September 1975
BUXTON HIT FOR SIX BY LETHAL LATICS
Latics racked up their best tally of the season with a clinical display against the team from Silverlands.
Braithwaite was in top form and controlled the game from his midfield berth, and once the unlucky AUSTIN had deflected a wicked cross by Worswick past a helpless keeper in the 15th minute it became a procession towards the visitor’s goal.
Prior to the opening goal Wigan had already served notice that they were, ‘in the mood’ with Gore rattling the bar with a fine drive from fully 25 yards.
On 26 minutes BRAITHWAITE applied the final touch as Latics deservedly extended their lead and worse was to follow for the visitors as Worswick was tripped in the box by Austin and GORE confidently rifled home the spot kick.
Half Time; Wigan Athletic 3-0 Buxton.
There was no let up after the break and John ROGERS got onto the end of a Worswick cross and powerfully fired home into the top corner, giving Davies no chance.
Eales in the Wigan goal was a virtual spectator and the incessant passing and movement of the Latics midfield soon saw WILKINSON latching onto a poor clearance and volleying home number five.
ROGERS capped off a fine all-round display by netting a sixth from close-range and completing the rout after good work by Wilkinson had created the opportunity.
