NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE
SCARBOROUGH vs WIGAN ATHLETIC
13th September 1975
HUNGRY TICS HAVE TO SETTLE FOR A POINT
Latics travelled to the game by coach but due to traffic hold ups they were running late and had to fore-go their midday meal.
The lack of sustenance did not seem to affect their performance and they should have had the lead before the break as they had the better of the first period with a number of eye-catching passing moves that but for bad luck and wayward finishing would have seen them ‘out of sight’.
A sweet four man move began deep in Wigans own box and ended with Jeff Wright firing in a shot that keeper Barnard somehow palmed away at full stretch.
Barnard then made another smart save to deny Roy Wilkinson and when the ball bounced back to Rogers he spooned the chance over the crossbar.
Half Time; Scarborough 0-0 Wigan Athletic.
The second period saw Scarborough pushing hard and they shaded the exchanges as Wigan came under mounting pressure.
On two separate occasions the keeper Eales was beaten and on each occasion he had to be grateful for the quick thinking of Tommy Gore who was able to cover and clear the efforts off the line.
Then in the dying minutes Peter Eales was the hero when he produced a stunning save to deny Woodall.
Young attacking midfielder Keith Braithwaite had a fine game for the Tics as he deputised for the injured Johnny King, and Joe Hinnigan was solid as he played in his third game since signing from South Liverpool for a four-figure fee.
