CHESHIRE COUNTY LEAGUE
WIGAN ATHLETIC vs BUXTON
27th September 1933
WASTEFUL LATICS GRATEFUL FOR GLIDDEN STRIKE.
Wigan totally dominated their visitors on a dull Wednesday evening but a series of woeful finishes resulted in an anxious contest as Latics failed to put their opposition to the sword. Latics quickly established their dominance in midfield and after early pressure Glidden slid a neat pass through for Cowper who fired in a low driven shot that Royle pushed had to dive full length to push around the post. The Derbyshire side were pinned back for lengthy periods with Scott delivering some dangerous crosses and only good handling from Royle and packed, often frantic, defence kept the scoresheet blank.
Buxton relied mainly on fast counter attacks and when a pass went astray Lester broke the Wigan defensive line but Caunce was quickly off his line to collect the ball off the forwards toes. Royle was much the busier keeper and saved twice from Scott and made another good catch from a Harrison header. On the half hour Royle should have had no chance as Glidden collected a right wing cross and looked certain to score but he blazed the gilt-edged chance wildly over the bar.
Two minutes later and GLIDDEN fully atoned for his miss. Kavanagh set the move in motion with a long ball to pick out Cowper, he in turn whipped in a deep cross and Felton nodded down to the striker who gave the keeper no chance as he fired home.
Felton nearly added his name to the scoresheet with a hooked effort but the shot drifted just wide of the post with Royle well beaten.
Buxton tried to get back into the game with Parker probing with a series of long balls but Lester and Oakes (who used to play for Wigan Borough) were well shackled by the Latics back line.
Half Time; Wigan Athletic 1-0 Buxton.
Wigan had a loud appeal for a penalty kick when the ball appeared to strike a defender’s hand but the referee, Mr. Roscoe from Bolton waved play on. Latics continued to dominate play and a cross by Glidden saw Cowper flash a header just past the post. Snaith had two long shots saved by the excellent Royle and the Buxton keeper again frustrated the home side when he made a fine double save, denying firstly Cowper and then Harrisson with fisted clearances.
Felton held off a strong challenge by Walker and fired in a shot that struck an upright, but the rebound, which fell to Glidden saw the Latics man screw his shot narrowly wide.
Buxton gained heart from Wigans poor finishing and with time running out they began to press forward with Keighley showing some nice touches in the centre of the park, and with the lead being such a slender one the home fans were understandably somewhat anxious. However, it was still Wigan who were dominating the possession and with their defence proving all but unbreachable they saw out the remaining minutes without any major concerns.
Full Time; Wigan Athletic 1-0 Buxton.
