WIGAN ATHLETIC vs NORTHERN NOMADS

17th April 1933

AN INTERESTING MATCH.

The game began with the Nomads controlling possession, but they seemed too content to weave patterns and their attacks lacked any proper penetration. For the Latics Jamieson was fulfilling a deeper role and this seemed to suit his abilities as he produced a number of probing passes. One such pass picked out Murphy who was able to burst forward and produce a dangerous cross that Hancock headed behind for a corner. From the flag kick Chambers planted a fine header just wide of the target, a capital attempt. Chambers, who had got used to some rough treatment from the opposition of late was revelling in the slightly less competitive nature of the match and he almost opened the scoring when after accepting a pass from Murphy he fired a strong shot that flew right across the face of the goal. Hughes was the next to go close, with a rasping shot that struck the top of the crossbar.

Murphy had a good shot saved by Jones, then at the home end Parker raced into space before setting up Sinclair in a good position, but the striker snatched at his shot and it went wide of the target. Murphy fired home a free kick after Chambers had been bundled over near the area, but the linesman ruled the effort off as it was decided that Chambers was offside.

Half Time; Wigan Athletic 0-0 Northern Nomads.

On 50 minutes Jamieson pinged a lovely pass to Murphy and when the winger crossed the ball CHAMBERS neatly controlled and then produced a lovely lobbed finish over the stranded keeper. Wigan now were controlling proceedings and they went close to scoring again with efforts by Swift and Chambers bringing the best out of Jones in the Nomads goal. Hughes, who was now producing a steady stream of useful crosses, picked out Swift and he looked to have scored but Jones produced a breathtaking low diving save to deny the youngster. The visitors briefly threatened and Jones had to kick two shots off the line when Abbott was beaten. Wigan got a second after a Callachan clearance found Murphy and when the winger pulled a ball back into the box CHAMBERS fired home. On 85 minutes ATRILL netted for the Nomads following a goalmouth scramble.
