 LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

WIGAN ATHLETIC vs WREXHAM

12th April 2025

LATICS TAME THE WELSH DRAGON BUT STILL CAN’T FIND THAT ELUSIVE WIN.

Wigan Athletic had the better of the opportunities, but ultimately the points were shared as Latics and Wrexham drew 0-0 in the lunchtime kick off.

Wigan Athletic created a number of goalscoring opportunities, but ultimately had to settle for a point in the end after a goalless draw with promotion chasing Wrexham at the Brick Community Stadium.

Head Coach Ryan Lowe made two changes from their midweek fixture at St James Park. The Latics boss freshened up the midfield, with Baba Adeeko and Jon Mellish replacing Scott Smith and Harry McHugh.

Keeper Sam Tickle started his 100th appearance for the Football Club, and was able to record his 36th clean sheet in Latics colours.

Both sides had early spells of possession without testing either goalkeeper.

Dale Taylor did get in behind Eoghan O’Connell, but the Wrexham defender got back to poke the ball behind for a corner which ultimately came to nothing.

Mellish then found space inside the box, but had two efforts blocked and when the loose ball fell to Taylor he saw his strike blocked by a Wrexham defender.

Maleace Asamoah was looking lively and his pace was upsetting the Wrexham centre backs, one forward surge saw the youngster cutting inside and curling an effort just wide of the far post. Will Aimson was pressing forward at every opportunity and his shot from distance just flashed wide.

Latics had limited Wrexham to shots from distance as George Dobson fired wildly over the Wigan crossbar.

Half Time; Wigan Athletic 0-0 Wrexham.

Wrexham regrouped at half time and came out on the front foot, but it was Latics who had a big chance to take the lead on 65 minutes as Asamoah Jr burst past his man down the right and fired a shot straight at Arthur Okonkwo when squaring for Taylor may have been the better option.

Latics then worked the space brilliantly moments later as Asamoah Jr was again involved, flicking the ball around the corner before Jensen Weir slipped in Dale, but he also fired straight at Okonkwo with the goal gaping.

Lowe’s men were looking dangerous and had another chance as Jon Mellish squared the ball across the face of goal, but the strikers had not anticipated the cross and the chance was spurned.

Wrexham did push for a late winner and there was an anxious moment when the ball struck Robinson on the arm and the Welsh players appealed for what would have been a very harsh penalty, but the referee waved play on and Latics held firm for a deserved point.

Full Time; Wigan Athletic 0-0 Wrexham.
