LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

PETERBOROUGH UNITED vs WIGAN ATHLETIC

28th January 2025

AASGAARD EXIT RUMOURS AND A BAD DAY ON THE ROAD.

The recent form of Wigans talented young Norwegian number ten had spawned plenty of transfer speculation and when his name was missing from the squad for the trip to Peterborough the fans immediately began preparing for the almost inevitable bad news.

Shaun Maloney made one change from the last league outing, with Will Goodwin returning to the starting line-up and Dale Taylor, who made his 100th career appearance, dropping into the number ten role.

Latics had the first attempt after just 15 seconds as Joe Hungbo volleyed over from the edge of the box, but it was the hosts who took the lead on 19 minutes as Tayo Edun crossed for SUSOHO who got in front of his marker to head in via the post.

The Posh were dominating possession without testing Sam Tickle too much. Chris Conn-Clarke tried his luck from 25 yards, but his free-kick flew over the Latics bar.

Latics, for their part, looked ponderous as they tried to muster a reply, with the build-up play being laboured and slow which allowed the home defence, which had a reputation for being less than water-tight, to recover its shape and close down the attacking options.

Toby Sibbick briefly offered some hope when he spun his man and crossed dangerously, but Goodwin could not get onto the end the low delivery.

Half Time; Peterborough United 1-0 Wigan Athletic.

Maloney made a triple change at half time and one of those changes, Jonny Smith looked sharp down the right as he beat his man and had a dangerous cross cleared.

Wigan continued to be short on attacking ideas but they did go close to an equaliser in bizarre fashion as Goodwin closed down Nicholas Bilokapic’s clearance and the deflected ball flew inches wide.

The hosts looked to break quickly and did so through Odoh. He approached the box and squared for Ricky-Jade Jones who was denied by a brilliant last ditch Will Aimson challenge.

Tickle then dived acrobatically to his right to deny Conn-Clarke with a strike from distance.

The resulting corner saw Tickle acrobatically punching the ball from under his own crossbar to ensure that the deficit was not doubled.

Latics pushed for a late leveller as we headed into seven added minutes, but the home side looked comfortable as they saw out the remaining time.
