Broadhead the hero as Wigan win derby.

Wigan Athletic earned their first home victory of the season in a 1-0 victory over local rivals Blackburn Rovers, in turn ending an eight-game winless run. The result also means Blackburn have now scored just once in their last six away league fixtures.

The first chance of the game went the way of Wigan Athletic, as Max Power whipped a freekick in and Tom Naylor headed wide of the near post with a glancing header. The Latics went close again shortly after, and this time Nathan Broadhead beat his man before forcing a save from Thomas Kaminski at the near post.

Rovers got their first chance of the game after 24 minutes, as Ben Brereton Diaz dispossessed Curtis Tilt before dragging his shot across the face of goal. Wigan almost took the lead in response, as Will Keane dispossessed Scott Wharton before driving at the Rovers defence and forcing a save from Kaminski.

Half Time; Wigan Athletic 0-0 Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn had the chance to take the lead just after the break, as Harry Pickering played through Brereton Diaz who tried to cut the ball across, but Jack Whatmough made a fantastic last-ditch tackle to keep the ball away from Tyrhys Dolan. Duly punishing their Lancastrian rivals, Wigan took the lead through BROADHEAD, as Tyler Morton was dispossessed by Keane who saw his shot saved by Kaminski before the Welshman prodded into the empty net.

The Latics almost added a second shortly after the first, as Thelo Aasgaard won his header in the centre of the box but he sent it over the bar. Rovers had a great chance to equalise, as Dolan’s cross fell to Brereton Diaz but he stabbed his shot wide of the post, much to the relief of the DW Stadium faithful, who sensed a precious home win.

Wigan held on to secure the three points and climb to ninth in the league, and just two points off the top six. However, failure to win for Blackburn means they miss out on the chance to go joint-top of the league.
