Tigers come roaring back in vital victory

Hull City brought an end to their five-game winless run in the Championship with a timely 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic at the MKM Stadium, handing interim manager Andy Dawson his first three points since taking temporary charge.

The form of both teams could not have been more contrasting coming into the game, with the Tigers having lost their last four matches while the Latics had won their last four games away from the DW Stadium. Hoping for a long overdue change in fortunes, the home fans suffered that familiar feeling once again when Theo Aasgaard’s inch-perfect cross into the area picked out striker Will KEANE, who nodded home to give the Latics the lead with his fifth league goal of the season.

Tigers fans may have feared the worst when it came to finding a way back into the game, given their side had not scored a single goal in their last four matches. However, Hull City found a relatively swift equaliser when captain Lewie Coyle’s inviting ball into the area picked out Dimitrios PELKAS, and the on-loan Greek attacker headed past Ben Amos to equalise with his first goal for the club. Having finally got back on the goalscoring trail, the home side began to grow in confidence and finished the first half as the better side. With half time approaching, they almost took the lead when Alfie Jones’ header from Callum Elder’s corner was tipped over by the alert Amos.

Having given his team the lead earlier on, Keane almost restored Wigan’s advantage in the early stages of the second half when he met Max Power’s cross into the area, but his effort was saved by Nathan Baxter. There was very little to separate the teams for large periods of the second period, but the decisive moment fell the way of the hosts inside the final half hour when top scorer Óscar ESTUPINAN powered a header into the net from Elder’s corner to clinch a much-needed victory with his eighth goal of the season.

The win lifts Hull City to 17th, while Wigan drop down to 12th.
