Latics Keane on play-offs after downing Millers

Wigan Athletic climbed above Rotherham United in midtable after claiming a hard-fought 2-0 away-win at Aesseal New York Stadium - the Latics are now unbeaten in their last five encounters against the Tykes.

Rotherham came into this encounter yet to lose at home this Championship season (W3, D2), but it was Wigan who made the brightest start. The Latics took the lead in just the 12th minute when Charlie Wyke assisted Will KEANE to power in a shot into the top-right corner and notch his fourth goal of the campaign. That goal also ended the hosts’ hopes of securing a third consecutive league clean sheet at this level for the first time in the 21st century.  Despite a late flurry of half-chances the hosts’ frustrations grew and Richard Wood was booked for the Millers just before the break to end a miserable first half.

Half Time; Rotherham United 0-1 Wigan Athletic.

Rotherham were fired up after the break but instead of an added goal threat, the extra urgency only culminated in two more early bookings out of frustration for the hosts. Paul Warne made a double substitution in the hope of evoking a response from his side, but a single shot on target was all the hosts could muster as the clock approached 20 minutes to go. Compounding the hosts’ lack of goal threat, Tom NAYLOR then doubled the visitors’ lead with a header from close range in the 84th minute from a superb Jack Whatmough corner. With the result now secure, Wigan controlled the remainder of the match to secure all three points.

The result sees the Latics move up to ninth in the table and within just two points of the play-off spots plus a game in hand. Meanwhile, Rotherham slip to 11th who have now won only once in their last five league games.

Full Time; Rotherham United 0-2 Wigan Athletic.
