Lang-tastic Wigan triumph against struggling Huddersfield

A late Callum Lang strike piled more misery on Huddersfield Town, who are now winless in 10 of the last 13 meetings against Wigan Athletic, following the Latics’ 2-1 victory at the John Smith's Stadium.

In a fixture that has historically favoured Wigan, the visitors wasted little time in taking the lead, after Will KEANE netted from 12-yards to give his side an advantage after 25 minutes. Referee Jeremey Simpson had little choice but to award a penalty after a clumsy challenge from Huddersfield’s Luke Mbete, with Keane making no doubt from the spot.

Winners in just one of seven previous home clashes against Wigan, Huddersfield’s chances were slim heading into the mid-week clash, but the hosts did respond well after falling behind. Engineering a chance for himself from 20-yards out, Jack Rudoni was unable to direct his strike on target, meaning last season’s playoff runners-up trailed at the break.

Half Time; Huddersfield Town 0-1 Wigan Athletic

Any hopes of a second-half revival by the Tykes were almost squashed immediately after the restart, when Jack Whatmough clattered the woodwork with a header from a Wigan corner.

The reprieve looked as if it would prove decisive for Huddersfield, as an improved second-half performance saw the home side rescue a point. Driving home a right-footed shot inside the penalty area, Tom LEES made the most of careless defending from the Wigan back line to fire home a deserved equaliser.

Ultimately, Wigan, who had enjoyed a stellar start to the campaign so far, once again found a way to take three points, with Callum LANG converting inside the box to send the travelling Latics fans behind the goal into ecstasy.
