Inspired Latics defeat Hatters

A late comeback saw Wigan Athletic come from behind to win 2-1 against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road. Luton are now without a win at home in five league games (D3, L2 including play-offs).

Luton Town were the first to threaten as Carlton Morris’ flick sent Elijah Adebayo one-on-one with the keeper, but Ben Amos was equal to it as he rushed out to Adebayo to make the save. Wigan Athletic went close down the other end shortly after, the ball bounced around the box before falling to James McClean but his volley deflected wide of the post. The next chance came for the Hatters, as Luke Freeman picked the ball up from deep and drove at the Wigan defence before unleashing a vicious strike towards goal but Amos was on hand to tip it over. The resulting corner led to another Luton chance as Tom Lockyer headed back towards goal but a combination of Amos and Max Power kept it out. Luton made their period of pressure count when Carlton MORRIS headed home from an inviting delivery from James Bree.

Half Time; Luton Town 1-0 Wigan Athletic.

Wigan had the first chance of the second half, as a dangerous McClean corner found the head of Will Keane but his glancing header went narrowly over the bar. Luton went close to doubling their lead when a corner found Gabriel Osho, but his effort on his left foot was curled just wide of the far post. Wigan's best chance of the second half came when McClean delivered the ball into the box and Callum Lang’s diving header went just wide. Wigan finally got the equaliser they wanted when Ryan Nyambe won the ball high up the pitch before playing the ball into Callum Lang whose scuffed shot took a deflection off the unlucky LOCKYER  that diverted the ball beyond Ethan Horvath in the Luton goal. Wigan took the lead late in the game, as substitute Thelo AASGAARD curled in a brilliant effort from the edge of the box into the far corner. Luton thought they’d equalised at the death when the ball was scrambled over the line from Bree’s free-kick, but it was given as offside.

The result sees Wigan Athletic climb to 14th in the table as Luton fall to 16th just three points above the bottom three.
