DW draw for Bruce’s faltering Baggies

Wigan Athletic extended their majestic unbeaten record from league matches played on Tuesday to four games after a closely-contested 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion at the DW Stadium.

In pursuit of continuing their impressive record against one of the automatic promotion favourites, the hosts were off to the perfect start after one defeat in their last five head to head encounters, with only six minutes on the clock. Recalled to the Wigan Athletic starting XI by Leam Richardson, the decision to start Josh MAGENNIS paid off immediately when he outmuscled Semi Ajayi before firing a clinical strike past a helpless David Button.

Hoping to register their first home victory of the 2022/23 Championship season, Latics goalkeeper Ben Amos remained an observant spectator on his first start after an enforced spell on the sidelines, as under-pressure Baggies manager Steve Bruce looked concerned from the dugout. However, Tom Naylor’s mistimed pass in the 22nd minute left Bruce sighing a breath of relief. Karlan GRANT took advantage with a marauding run to the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a perfectly-struck shot into the bottom left-hand corner. Despite failing to make the most of opportunities in the final third, the visitors arguably made their way down the DW tunnel as the more content of the two sides after recovering from falling behind.

Half Time; Wigan Athletic 1-1 West Bromwich Albion

With only one league victory this season, both sides remained inseparable, approaching the hour mark of the contest, as neither manager was content to become the first to roll the substitutional dice. Looking to register their maiden win of the season at the DW Stadium, on-loan Everton forward Nathan Broadhead entered the fray for the final 20 minutes in search of his second goal for the Latics.

Despite further alterations, both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils as the pressure on Bruce mounts. Meanwhile, the Latics remain with only a solitary win in their first season back in the second-tier of English football since 2020.
