Clever Clarets claim blood in derby thrashing

Burnley prevailed 5-1 against their bitter Lancashire rivals Wigan Athletic, as four different goalscorers ended Wigan’s ten-game unbeaten run in Championship home games.

With both prior Championship head to heads ending 0-0, there was some expectation of blood and guts over goals and glamour, and Curtis Tilt made his mark in the former respect, with a crunching tackle on Jay Rodriguez that drew the game’s first booking. Burnley proved to be the more composed side despite that early flashpoint, with Vitinho proving particularly menacing before playing a part in the opener, causing problems that culminated in Jóhann Berg Gudmundsson seeing a shot blocked, before RODRIGUEZ smashed the Clarets in front.

While Vitinho couldn’t claim an assist for the opener, he certainly could for Burnley’s second goal shortly after the half-hour mark. Showing the flair of a true Brazilian, he insolently nutmegged Tendayi Darikwa before squaring a ball to Josh BROWNHILL, who fired into the roof of the Latics net to double Burnley’s lead in what was by now a very one-sided Lancashire derby. Yet, there was time enough for a twist late in the first half, as Wigan won a penalty after Arijanet Muric committed a foul inside the area, and Will KEANE hit it straight down the middle despite Muric getting a leg to the spot-kick.

Half Time; Wigan Athletic 1-2 Burnley

Having blown a 3-1 lead against Blackpool last weekend, there were lingering fears of another capitulation, but Burnley restored their two-goal cushion early in the second half. Having proven a menace at times before the break, Southampton loanee Nathan TELLA made it three goals in two games, showing real composure to score from a well-improvised Brownhill pass.

Josh Magennis almost gave Wigan some late hope of getting back into the game, with Muric palming over the Northern Irishman’s header, before bravely punching away the resulting corner. However, Burnley quickly destroyed any lingering Wigan threat, scoring two quickfire goals, firstly through BROWNHILL with a check inside and shot from the right flank, before Samuel BASTIEN fired into the far corner from a break, sealing a fifth to make Burnley the highest away scorers of the league to date.
