Ten-man Latics frustrate Blues
Birmingham City’s poor home record against Wigan Athletic did not improve as they fell to a 1-0 defeat. The Blues had beaten the Latics just once in their five previous meetings at St Andrews, with the result dampening their early hopes of a top-half finish.
With four home points from the first six available, Birmingham were expected to start on the front foot. They did just that, as Josh Williams’ early cross from the right hand side found Przemyslaw Placheta on the edge of the box, but his effort was always rising and went over the bar. Birmingham continued to apply pressure, and an increasingly-frustrated Wigan found themselves down to ten men with just ten minutes gone, after Joseph Bennett was adjudged to have brought down Lukas Jutkiewicz as he was bearing down on goal. The resulting free kick was taken by Juninho Bacuna, and his effort flew narrowly wide of the bottom corner.
Wigan Athletic almost took the lead despite their one-man deficit, after John Ruddy punched the ball out from a Latics corner, but only as far as Tom Naylor. St Andrews drew a collective gasp, but he could only drag his shot wide of the upright. The Latics had another gilt-edged chance moments before half time too, as Callum Lang was played down the right wing and his cross found Will Keane, but he couldn't direct his volley goalwards.
Half Time; Birmingham City 0-0 Wigan Athletic;
Birmingham started after the interval as they meant to go on, as the ball fell into the path of Bacuna, he drilled the ball across the face of goal, but it could only be deflected behind for a corner. Wigan then almost took the lead against the run of play, as Max Power drilled a thunderous effort towards the bottom corner, but Ruddy was on hand to get down and make the save.
Wigan were visibly frustrated, but were rewarded after a brutal counter attack in which Charlie Wyke found Nathan BROADHEAD, and the Everton loanee drilled a shot low into the near bottom corner to snatch the points. Aiming to return to the Premier League after almost a decade’s absence, Wigan remain unbeaten in the Championship after picking up their first win (W1, D3), and this result sees them move up to 14th in the table, whilst Birmingham fall to 18th.
