Keane Latics prove their Will power
Will Keane’s second-half equaliser maintained newly-promoted Wigan Athletic’s unbeaten start to life in the EFL Championship, as they showed heart to come back from an early Andreas Weimann opener for Bristol City at the DW Stadium, and secured a third successive draw from their opening three fixtures.
Unbeaten in their last three H2Hs (W1, D2), Bristol looked to improve on that record from the offset as they started with fast and direct attacking play. The intensity paid off after just six minutes when Tommy Conway sped away to assist the in-form WEIMANN, whose left-footed shot from close range found the bottom-right corner to notch his third goal in the league this season and stun the DW Stadium. Coming into this match, the newly-promoted Latics had made an unbeaten start to life in the EFL Championship.
Yet, despite struggling against the Robins in the early exchanges, the hosts soon found some fluidity, resulting in 60% of possession and numerous efforts on goal approaching half time – most notably a header by Josh Magennis from a Max Power cross that went just over the bar.
Half Time; Wigan Athletic 0-1 Bristol City.
Hoping to maintain the momentum built in the first half, Wigan replaced booked defender Joe Bennett with the more attacking-minded Thelo Aasgaard at the restart. However, the hosts were then forced to replace their goalkeeper, Ben Amos, with Jamie Jones due to injury just 10 minutes later, which seemed to upset their flow.
Bristol City began to grow in confidence as they searched for a decisive second, but it was the Latics who seized their chance when Keane smashed home a right-footed shot from close range in the 67th minute to restore parity. With all three points now up for grabs and the hosts full of confidence, they looked the more likely to seal the win, notching up eight second-half efforts on goal compared to the visitors’ two.
Even with nearly 10 minutes of injury-time, a winner was not to come though, as both sides shared the spoils in a hard-fought and momentum-shifting encounter. Despite now remaining unbeaten in their last four games the draw sees Bristol City second from bottom whilst the resilient Wigan Athletic remain unbeaten in the league this season, leaving themselves just below mid-table in 15th.
