Canaries kept caged by determined Tics

Norwich City were left rueing an abundance of missed opportunities in the first half, as the Canaries were held to a frustrating 1-1 stalemate with Wigan Athletic at Carrow Road.

Norwich showcased an unparalleled level of attacking dominance in the opening exchanges, as Marcelino Núñez particularly caught the eye on his Canaries’ debut. Having already eclipsed the seven shots they produced against Cardiff City with only 20 minutes on the clock, Norwich were inches away from taking the lead in a so-far one-sided contest, when Max Aarons unleashed a low strike that flew inches wide.

Not deterred, Wigan created a glorious chance to break the deadlock, but Callum Lang's overzealous first-touch allowed the onrushing Tim Krul the opportunity to extinguish the impending danger. Yet, the visitors atoned only six minutes later, when Will Keane's instinctive interception of Ben Gibson’s mistimed pass allowed James MCCLEAN to slot past Krul.

Half Time; Norwich City 0-1 Wigan Athletic.

Looking to avoid successive defeats to begin a second-tier season for the first time since 1997/98, Norwich began the second-period in similar fashion to how they began the contest, as Milot Rashica fired a venomous early warning shot into the chest of Ben Amos. With frustration growing among the home faithful, AARONS was not to be denied his first goal since April 2021, twice on the same afternoon, as the marauding full-back lifted the roof off a relieved Carrow Road shortly after the hour-mark with a crisply-struck strike that squirmed through Amos’ body.

Now embodying a Norwich side in possession of renewed confidence, the menacing Núñez continued to impress, agonisingly firing over the top of the crossbar as the contest approached its concluding stages. After surprisingly not registering a shot on target against Cardiff, Teemu Pukki was then left in steer disbelief in the 82nd minute when Amos flicked his effort onto the top of the crossbar to leave the scoreline all-square.

Despite a late attacking onslaught, amid two penalty appeals being nonchalantly waived away by Matt Donohue, Norwich frustratingly remain in wait for their first victory of the season. Wigan, meanwhile, can look back on a strong result and a performance that belied their newly-promoted status.
