CHESHIRE COUNTY LEAGUE

WIGAN ATHLETIC   vs HYDE UNITED

27th December 1932

HYDE GIVEN A REALLY GOOD HIDING.

The dull drizzly weather did not deter a healthy home following in a crowd of 8,100, who generated receipts of £257 and a fair deal of vocal support for a Wigan side that made only one change from the previous day. O’Dell had not recovered from his injury and Jones returned to partner Callachan in defence. Hyde had injury and illness concerns themselves and their team did have a patched up look about it.

Latics began on the front foot and after six minutes of sustained pressure they opened the scoring. Murphy had been lively and had already supplied a number of crosses, but one of his efforts struck the Hyde crossbar and MCCABE, reacting quickly, lashed the rebound home. Davies was called upon to turn efforts from Fisher and Matthews over the bar, while Wigan had efforts by McCabe and Murphy that similarly had too much elevation.

On 22 minutes good work down the left wing enabled Jamieson to deliver an accurate cross that HUGHES controlled well before slotting home the second. Hughes and McCabe both had shots that were well dealt with by Travis.

Hyde tried to respond and a low drive by Izon passed narrowly wide of the home goal. If that was a close call for the Wigan defence then Connolly went closer still with a rasping drive that thundered against the woodwork. Then on 40 minutes Hughes got free and whipped in a good cross that Leech could only partially head clear, this allowed the alert CHAMBERS to direct a skilful header beyond Travis to extend the lead.

Half Time; Wigan Athletic 3-0 Hyde United.

With fog threatening to build the referee turned the teams around straight away and play resumed promptly. Wigan quickly re-established their dominance and pushed forward as the team from South East Manchester visibly began to wilt. On 67 minutes JAMIESON scored the fourth with a neat header and in so doing he put paid to any lingering thoughts of a Hyde recovery.

Hughes was having a splendid game on the Wigan wing and was leading his markers a merry dance, so it was no surprise when he sprinted free on 72 minutes before delivering a cross that MURPHY received before gleefully rifling home. Hughes almost netted again four minutes later, he waltzed down the wing, before cutting inside and firing in a low shot, but Travis anticipated well and palmed the ball away, only for the alert CHAMBERS to poke the ball home.

Latics continued to press for more goals, and Hughes did find the net, only for the effort to be ruled out, correctly, for offside.  Another Hughes cross was whipped across the face of the Hyde goal and Chambers flung himself full length to try and apply the finishing touch, the striker finished in an untidy heap in the back of the Hyde goal, but the ball was safely cleared.

Another right-wing cross was missed by Murphy, who placed his shot wide of the goal. Then in the dying minutes McCabe broke free but in trying to round the keeper he came second best to Travis who smothered the ball.
