Report by John Patrick Heeley
Wigan came away from the Racecourse Ground with all three points and the satisfaction of a job well done.
Latics dominated the game from start to finish and goals from Liddell, Haworth and full-back De Zeeuw move them into third place.
Latics moved up to third place in Division Two thanks to a fine display at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.
A goal apiece from Andy Liddell, Simon Haworth and Arjan de Zeeuw ensured that Wigan continued their unbeaten start to the season and maintain the quest for a place in Division One.
The game started reasonably quiet with chances at either end going begging and didn't take long for Wakefield referee Alan Kaye to make his mark on the game with a succession of free kicks and the bookings of ian Kilford and Roberto Martinez in the first ten minutes.
The game was turned on it's head shortly after the half hour mark when Kevin Sharp, playing his first match of the season after serving a three match suspension, had his long range effort deflected by a Wrexham defender straight to the feet of ANDY LIDDELL who placed his shot past the helpless Rogers in the Wrexham goal. Wrexham believed that Liddell had been offside and protested furiously to the referee. Wrexham striker Craig Faulconbridge vented his anger at one of the referee's assistants, who reported him to the referee and was dismissed for abusive language, as the players were waiting to restart the game.
Wrexham were forced to reshuffle their formation and Trinidad and Tobago international Hector Sam became the lone striker as Wrexham were forced to defend in numbers against a Wigan side with a newly found determination.
Half Time: Wrexham 0 Wigan 1
Wrexham were unlucky early in the second half when Alex Ferguson's son Darren lobbed a sweet ball over Roy Carroll in the Wigan goal but his effort landed on top of the crossbar.
The game was finished as a contest on 54 minutes when a Kevin Sharp corner was pushed out by Rogers but only as far as SIMON HAWORTH and the grateful Welsh striker stuck the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
A minute later Haworth went close to adding a third but was denied by Rogers with a superb diving save to push the ball behind for a corner.
Young Wigan defender Paul Mitchell made his football league debut as he was brought on as replacement for Scott Green on 64 minutes but his world was turned upside down 8 minutes later. Wrexham striker Carlos Richards tried to clear the ball and Mitchell came rushing in with what appeared to be nothing more than a badly timed tackle but the referee was having none of it and reached for his pocket to show the second red of the game.
The setback seemed to spur Wigan on and three minutes later DE ZEEUW powered a header from a Sharp free kick past Rogers to make it 3-0.
Wrexham's consolitation came on 81 minutes when HECTOR SAM turned with the ball and blasted past a helpless Carroll from 20 yards.
