LEAGUE DIVISION THREE
CAMBRIDGE UNITED vs WIGAN ATHLETIC
23rd October 1990
LATICS LEAVE IT LATE TO GRAB THE SPOILS.
A long road trip down to the Abbey Stadium on a Tuesday evening was never going to be an easy assignment and that is exactly how it turned out.
United, who sat one place above the Latics, and who were in a fine run of form were always going to be a stern test.
The opening exchanges were well contested with neither side able to dominate but Wigan grabbed that all important first goal just after the half hour when Griffiths delivered a deep cross and JOHNSON rose highest to power home a header.
Half Time; Cambridge United 0-1 Wigan Athletic.
Cambridge drew level straight from the restart when John TAYLOR took full advantage as Adkins flapped at a looped cross and nodded home.
Then, buoyed by that success they piled pressure on the Wigan defence which resulted in a second goal in the 65th minute.
Dion Dublin was leading the Cambridge forward line and was proving a real handful and laid the ball into the path of Richard WILKINS he needed no second invitation to unleash a drive that flew past a static Adkins in the Wigan goal.
Cambridge continued to apply the pressure as they searched for more goals but with only one goal in it there was always hope that Wigan could muster a response and with time running out Griffiths got his head onto a Ray Woods cross and directed his header goalwards, the effort beat the keeper and struck the post but the rebound fell to DALEY who slotted home.
Two minutes later and a lobbed ball over the home defence by Daley allowed PAGE to use his pace to get beyond Chapple and the home keeper Vaughan, before rolling the ball into an empty net.
The travelling Wigan fans celebrated wildly as with only minutes left there was precious little time for the home side to respond and Latics closed out the game to grab a fine win.
