FRIENDLY – LANCS MANX CUP
BURNLEY vs WIGAN ATHLETIC
14th August 1990
ADKINS BLOOPER ENDS CUP HOPES.
After the dull affair against Bolton this game proved to be a much more well contested tie. Burnley grabbed the opening goal in the 7th minute when a seemingly harmless free kick by Deary was allowed to go uncontested and FARRELL was completely unmarked as he headed home.
Latics tried to respond and forced a series of corner kicks but without reward. In the 20th minute the lead was doubled when a Jakub corner was headed home by FUTCHER.
Five minutes later a clever piece of wing-play by Woods gave Fairclough a shooting chance but his effort lacked power and was collected by Williams.
Half time; Burnley 2-0 Wigan Athletic.
The Clarets continued to threaten and the pace of Francis was stretching the Wigan defence but Latics were looking more dangerous in attack with Daley and Woods having shots cleared off the line. In the 67th minute a sustained period of pressure was finally rewarded when Fairclough crossed to DALEY whose downward header found the net.
Adkins saved well from Futcher and Francis as Wigan committed men forward but in the 81st minute the Wigan keeper made the rash decision to sprint from goal to try and block FRANCIS and the wingman reached the ball first and lofted shot to secure the game.
Full time; Burnley 3-1 Wigan Athletic.
