FRIENDLY – LANCS MANX CUP
WIGAN ATHLETIC vs BOLTON WANDERERS
11th August 1990
LATICS FIRING BLANKS IN LANCS CUP
The game was far from a classic and it lacked the passion that you usually associate from a derby clash with both sides clearly focussed on preparing for the new season and not prepared to risk injury so close to the big kick-off.
Ex-Anfield star made his debut in Latics colours and he linked up well with Woods and Griffiths who provided width down both flanks.
An early slip by the Bolton defence almost let Wigan in as Daley was able to feed Fairclough and his low, hard shot was well saved by Felgate. At the other end Adkins did well to push a Thompson free-kick away and was always quick off his line to clear any danger from longer balls over the back line.
Half time; Wigan Athletic 0-0 Bolton Wanderers.
The game gradually deteriorated into a fairly dour midfield contest and any chances, for both sides, were easily snuffed out. Daley did offer some hope with his aerial presence but his radar was off centre as, in the main, his flicks and headers failed to find their intended targets.
Both sides have won this cup in previous years but if either side is to repeat that feat they will need to sharpen up their finishing
Full time; Wigan Athletic 0-0 Bolton Wanderers.
